Bingo Caller Benefit Cheat Handed Eight Month Jail Sentence

On the whole we hear plenty of great things about bingo; it is after all a great game. Sometimes we hear less positive stories, some are circumstantial such as this one about a benefits cheat who was claiming incapacity whilst working at her local bingo hall.

Sophie Stefferson, aged 58, has been claiming benefits for a condition which she said left her breathless and unable to work. During this time she had amassed over £60,000 in handouts whilst at the same time working as a bingo caller at the Top Ten bingo hall in Ebbw Vale.

Unlike previous cases it seems that this one was not born out of greed but necessity, at least that’s what Stefferson would have you believe. Her solicitor explained the situation in court. He said, “She did not use the benefits for things like exotic holidays but just used them to scrape by”.

The judge was dismissive of these claims and questioned the eight year timescale on which the claims were being made. He said, “You had eight long years to stop this fraud but only stopped when you were caught”.

Stefferson was handed an eight month jail term for her crimes, which will likely be reduced for good behavior. This punishment has been construed as a farce by many onlookers, many of whom seem fed up with the way the welfare system works (or should that be doesn’t work).

What do you think, was this a fair punishment? Share your thoughts with other bingo picks members below.
